Book Review: Tempted by Deception by Rina Kent

This is the second book in the Deception Trilogy by Rina Kent and it’s just as amazing as the previous book – here are my honest thoughts.

When it comes to flashbacks in a book, I’ve always been in the school of thought that less is more.

So I have never, ever read a book where the sequel is just an entire flashback. But that’s what our author does here, and it actually works.

Now, if you remember, I read Vow of Deception, and it was so good I immediately jumped into the next book because I needed to know what was happening.

Why was Winter having those weird dreams? What exactly happened with she and Adrian? What’s up with the ghost that she was seeing? What exactly happened in this marriage?

And we get all these answers and more in this second book, and I relished every moment.

Now, we get to see how their relationship actually developed, how they fell in love with each other, how her mental state steadily declined, and basically, we get the rundown up until the point when the first book starts.

I think this is actually very coincidental because I am, right now, watching a Chinese drama named Princess Silver, which is also about a girl who wakes up with amnesia and basically has to figure out this world that she has been thrust into.

Now, Winter—or shall I call her Lia? (You’ll find out more when you read the book)—is having a psychotic break.

And the things she finds out about herself during this period where she doesn’t remember who she is were just fascinating.

For the female lead in the drama I just mentioned, she finds out that she has amazing martial arts skills, she uncovers her history, and soon enough, she’s thrown into a political marriage. Now, the stakes aren’t as high in this book, but I just couldn’t help but draw parallels between their two fates.

In the first book, one theme that was predominant throughout the entire story was Winter being constantly shocked at finding out things she likes and the kind of things she’s able to take, especially in her relationship with Adrian.

And this is something we also see here. Lia’s conception of herself changes when she meets Adrian, and the dynamics between them was so fascinating to see.

There are some things that I genuinely believe belong only in story world, and I’m glad (and hopeful) that Adrian isn’t a real person out there and that nobody is actually in this situation—because I cannot imagine, for the life of me, how anyone would even survive.

And of course, Adrian, who is not one to be left out of the limelight, absolutely shone in this book. You guys, Adrian has literally redefined what a morally gray MC means.

I know people throw this around a lot when talking about male protagonists in dark romance books, but I’m not joking when I say that he is the definition of a guy who toes the line between being ridiculously bad and keeping justice.

That said, this was such a fantastic sequel, and I will immediately read the third book because there’s no way I won’t find out what actually happens next.

You guys, this author really knows how to keep her readers on a leash, and I will gladly follow her wherever she wants me to go.
