I’m probably the most annoying mood reader ever – to be honest, a reading list has never really worked for me.
But while I was brainstorming more content ideas for the blog, I decided to challenge myself and actually create a steady reading list for the books I want to read this month.
These books are the ones coming out this month that I’m most excited to read, but I also made sure to write some other posts about the best books being released in September 2025.
This list in particular is made up of books I am personally, seriously looking forward to – some are by my all-time favorite authors, whose new books I haven’t gotten around to yet, and I’m so excited to see what happens in these stories.

I also created a master list of the best new romance, thriller, science fiction, fantasy, and nonfiction books coming out in 2025, so you can check that out too.
Dinner at the Night Library by Hika Hirada

This one is about a very special library in Tokyo that only opens at night, displaying books by authors who have passed away.
Otoha, the new employee, joins a group of people who all love books deeply, even though the publishing world has hurt them.
They share warm, book-inspired meals every night and slowly become like a family.
But when strange things start happening that threaten to close the library, they all must rethink what books–and life–truly mean to them.
This story feels like a comforting hug for any book lover, and I can’t wait to read it.
Middle Spoon by Alejandro Varela

This novel sounds so real and funny yet touching, and I can’t wait.
Middle Spoon is about a man who has a husband, kids, and a boyfriend – basically living what looks like the dream.
But then his boyfriend dumps him, and he feels heartbreak for the first time.
Now he has to deal with heartbreak and how society judges people who love more than one person.
Alejandro Varela writes about love, relationships, and all the silly rules people try to put on them.
I’m looking forward to the way this book questions what family can look like, with humor, heart, and maybe even a bit of hope.
Revenge of Odessa by Frederick Forsyth

I’m always drawn to thrillers with high stakes, and this one is super exciting.
Georg Miller, a Berlin podcaster, discovers that the Nazi network Odessa is active again and planning horrific attacks.
He goes on a wild chase from Germany to the White House, trying to stop them before they change history forever.
It’s so tense knowing these terrorists are right on his trail. I love stories that dive into history and imagine what might happen if evil forces returned.
Frederick Forsyth is a master at this kind of book, and I’m eager to see how Georg fights back against an unstoppable threat.
The Killer Question by Janice Hallett

Janice Hallett brings us to a cozy country pub where trivia night has saved the owners’ lives until a body is found in the river.
Then a new quiz team arrives, winning every week, which seems very suspicious.
Secrets bubble up, especially since the owners have a hidden past with the police.
Years later, their nephew tries to figure out what really happened at this mysterious pub.
I love how the story is told through quiz questions and messages, and that makes it so different and clever. If you like solving puzzles, you’ll adore this book, too.
Little Movements by Lauren Morrow

This one is about Layla, a Black choreographer who leaves her husband and city behind to teach dance in mostly white Vermont.
It’s a brave move, but she has big dreams.
Layla has to work through her marriage, her art, and being pregnant while dealing with a town that doesn’t always welcome her.
She finds support in new friends but still struggles with the big questions: Can you have a family and still follow your dreams?
I love stories about creative people finding their voice, and this book sounds powerful, emotional, and deeply moving. I know it will inspire me.
Life, and Death, and Giants by Ron Rindo

Gabriel, born huge and gifted, lives with his Amish grandparents after his brother dies.
They try to hide him away from the world, but it’s impossible when he’s so different.
When he is seen by a football coach, his life changes completely.
I love how this story shows Gabriel’s kindness and heart while exploring how a small town reacts to someone who doesn’t fit in.
It’s about family, secrets, and how even a single person can change lives.
I think I’ll fall in love with Gabriel and his story, and maybe shed a tear or two.
A Particularly Nasty Case by Adam Kay

Eitan Rose, a doctor, starts to suspect foul play when a mean hospital consultant dies, but no one believes him.
When another death happens, Eitan becomes convinced there’s a killer on the loose. Is he right, or is he losing his mind?
Adam Kay combines funny with creepy in a way that just grabs me. I can’t wait to see if Eitan figures it out or gets in deeper trouble.
It sounds like a perfect, twisty medical mystery with lots of dark humor. I’m so curious about this one.
The Most Unusual Haunting of Edgar Lovejoy by Roan Parrish

This book sounds so sweet and spooky in the best way.
Jamie builds haunted houses for work but doesn’t believe in ghosts until they meet Edgar, who is absolutely haunted.
Edgar is lovely but scared of opening up, because ghosts really do follow him everywhere.
I love that this story is part romance, part ghost story, and all about finding a safe place with someone who understands you.
I think it will be heartwarming and a bit magical, with cozy haunted house vibes and a queer love story that feels so fresh.
Uncharmed by Lucy Jane Wood

I’m so happy Lucy Jane Wood has another witchy story coming.
Annie seems perfect, with her pink magical life, until she has to mentor a powerful, troubled teenage witch.
Suddenly, everything goes sideways, and Annie’s perfect world unravels.
There’s found family, messy mistakes, and a lot of heart.
I love stories where people learn it’s okay not to be perfect and where being true to yourself is what really matters.
The cozy magic and warm feelings make this book sound so comforting.
I’m looking forward to meeting Annie and the teenage witch she’s trying to help, and seeing how they change each other.
The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai

Sonia and Sunny are lonely young people from India, living far from home and trying to find their place in America.
Their families try to push them together, but it only pushes them apart.
This story follows their lives across years and continents, and it shows love, family, culture, and what it really means to belong.
Kiran Desai is so good at writing deep, layered stories that make you think.
I’m looking forward to how these characters find their own paths, and maybe even a bit of happiness, in a changing world.
Let me know which books you’re most excited to read in September 2025 – it doesn’t even matter if it isn’t a new release.
There are some books I’ve wanted to read since the beginning of the year, but somehow I just haven’t had the time to sit down with them yet, or the moment hasn’t felt right.
Those books are definitely on my must-read list for this September too, but I decided not to include them in this post since I wanted to focus on new book releases for September 2025 that I’m most excited about.
Let me know your thoughts – what’s been going on with your reading lately? I’d love to hear all about it!
