I have said it before, and I’ll say it again: when you make a conscious and intentional effort to ensure that your children are reading, you are truly raising a champion.

It cannot be emphasized enough how important it is for children to be exposed to books and to new worlds from an early age.

If you’re putting together your child’s reading list this new year, now is the perfect time to add some of the most beautiful picture books about the New Year.

These stories help children understand the meaning of new beginnings while also introducing them to different cultures and traditions around the world.

This is something I have personally done with my younger siblings, and I have watched them grow over the years.

The difference reading has made in their confidence, curiosity, and imagination is so clear – and it’s truly worth it.

Tomorrow Is New Year’s Day by Aram Kim

Tomorrow Is New Years

I absolutely adore this book!

Mina is so excited because it’s Seollal, the Korean Lunar New Year, her favorite day of the year.

I love how she can’t wait to share her colorful hanbok, teach her classmates how to do sebae, and make yummy tteokguk together.

It’s so sweet how her little brother might join in too, even if he’s in a grumpy mood at first.

I love that this story isn’t just about celebrating – it’s about sharing traditions and making new friends.

The glossary at the end is such a thoughtful touch for learning Korean words, too.

Shante’ Keys and the New Year’s Peas by Gail Piernas-Davenport

Shante Keys and the New Years

I think this book is such a cheerful way for kids to learn about New Year traditions from all over the world.

Shanté Keys discovers Chinese New Year, Diwali, and all kinds of ways people celebrate January 1st in different countries.

I love how colorful the pages are and how the author adds little extra facts about the foods and customs.

It makes me feel like I’m on a little adventure around the globe.

I really appreciate that kids get to see that there isn’t just one way to celebrate the New Year – it’s fun, diverse, and full of surprises.

Feliz New Year, Ava Gabriela! by Alexandra Alessandri

Feliz New Year

I love how relatable Ava Gabriela’s story is. She’s visiting her family in Colombia and is excited to join in the traditions, like making bunuelos.

But being surrounded by all her loud relatives makes her shy and quiet, and I really felt for her.

The story shows how sometimes it’s scary to speak up or join in, but when Ava finds her voice, the New Year becomes full of fun and laughter.

I adore the way this book celebrates family, courage, and new experiences.

It really makes me feel like being part of someone else’s traditions is both exciting and heartwarming.

Every Month is a New Year by Marilyn Singer

Every Month is a New Year

This book is such a treasure. I love how it shows that New Year celebrations happen all over the world, not just on January 1st.

From Chinese New Year in winter to Nowruz in March, Rosh Hashanah in fall, and Diwali in October or November, every month has something to celebrate.

I really enjoy the poems – they’re playful and fun, and each one gives a peek into a new culture’s traditions.

I think it’s amazing that kids can learn how diverse and colorful the world is.

I love how it turns every month into a chance for joy and celebration.

Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution by Julia Rawlinson

Squirrels New Years

I think this book is just adorable.

Squirrel is curious about resolutions, and I love how she discovers that they’re more important than snacks (though I totally get why she asked!).

Watching her go around the forest learning about resolutions with her friends is both funny and heartwarming.

I really enjoy the gentle way the story shows kids that setting goals and trying new things is exciting and fun.

And of course, I love waiting to see what Squirrel decides her own resolution will be – it’s such a cute, thoughtful journey about friendship, learning, and growing.

Two New Years by Richard Ho

Two New Years

I really love the idea of celebrating two New Years in one year.

This story is so warm and inviting. It shows how one family celebrates Rosh Hashanah with apples, honey, and challah, and later enjoys Lunar New Year with dumplings, dragon dances, and lanterns.

I adore how it shows that families can have many traditions and that each one is special in its own way.

I think it’s a wonderful way for kids to understand that culture can be layered and diverse, and celebrations can be twice as joyful.

I love how it feels both personal and universal at the same time.

We Are Lion Dancers by Benson Shum

We Are Lion Dancers

This book is just bursting with energy and fun.

I love how Lily and Noah are drawn to the lion dancers practicing for the parade.

Watching them get involved, help make a lion costume, and learn about the dance is so exciting.

I also adore that the book has simple text and funny moments that make it perfect for young readers.

The extra facts about the lion dance at the back are such a thoughtful addition.

I really love that this book encourages kids to read, learn, and even try things themselves.

It’s lively, joyful, and makes you want to celebrate right alongside the characters.
