Halloween is literally my favorite time of the year.

Every Halloween, I make it a tradition to find and read the most terrifying book I can get my hands on and so far, I haven’t failed myself once.

If you want in on the tradition, pick any of the books in this list. They’re that good.

A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers

A Certain Hunger

If you love spooky Halloween horror books with a strong female lead, A Certain Hunger is totally unforgettable.

Dorothy is a brilliant food critic who’s passionate about food and also something much darker.

I was shocked by how much I loved this terrifying book about a woman who knows what she wants and doesn’t hold back.

It’s disturbing, yes, but there’s something weirdly empowering about her. I won’t lie, this is a creepy Halloween horror story that’s more gourmet than gory, but it sticks with you.

If you’re into chilling Halloween fiction about morally twisted women, this book bites back in the best (and worst) ways.

I kept thinking about Dorothy long after I finished. Just maybe don’t read it while eating.

The Elementals by Michael McDowell

The Elementals

The Elementals is the kind of classic Halloween haunted house horror that feels like it crawls under your skin and I mean that in the best way.

I thought I’d just read a few pages one night, and suddenly I was completely trapped in Beldame with the characters.

There’s sand, heat, creepy family secrets, and something in that third house I’ll never forget.

This Southern Gothic Halloween read is perfect if you love slow-building dread with real emotional weight.

It’s honestly one of the scariest Halloween horror novels I’ve read, and that’s saying something. I felt so uneasy, yet I couldn’t stop turning the pages.

If you’re looking for atmospheric Halloween horror that gives you goosebumps in the summer heat, this one is absolutely it.

The Devil by Name by Keith Rosson

The Devil by Name

This one is a chilling Halloween horror survival novel that made me think deeply about the world.

It takes place after a strange apocalyptic phone call drives people mad. I couldn’t stop thinking about what I would do if that ever happened to us.

The characters are struggling to survive, but there’s still a little hope, and I loved that. It’s gory and heartbreaking, but also thoughtful and weirdly beautiful.

If you like your Halloween horror books post-apocalyptic with creepy zombie-like creatures and giant government conspiracies, you’ll be hooked like I was.

This book is intense and dark, but I felt connected to each character and specially Naomi – her story was haunting and powerful.

Diavola by Jennifer Thorne

Diavola

If you’ve ever been on a family trip that slowly turned into a nightmare, Diavola will feel uncomfortably familiar.

I kept nodding along at how painfully real the family dynamics were and then the horror hit.

This spooky vacation-Gothic Halloween horror story is full of dread and sharp humor. I actually laughed a few times before the fear set in.

The beautiful villa hides terrifying secrets, and I loved how the story twisted classic haunted house tropes in such a clever way.

The buildup was eerie, and once the weirdness started, I couldn’t look away.

This one delivers in the creepiest (and most entertaining) way if you want a Halloween read about creepy old homes, unsettling noises, and family tension that simmers into terror.

The Black Orb by Ewhan Kim

The Black Orb

The Black Orb felt like the end of the world and honestly, I loved it. This Halloween horror thriller is so different from anything I’ve read.

It starts with a huge, mysterious orb swallowing people whole. The tension is immediate, and it never lets go.

I found myself thinking about survival, fear, and how fast everything could change. It reminded me of my favorite scary movies but with an emotional twist.

If you like international horror with a heavy dose of dread, this one’s a perfect pick for Halloween night.

The atmosphere is unreal, and the idea of these black orbs just appearing? Terrifying.

The story blends sci-fi and horror so well, and Jeong-su’s journey hit me hard. Truly a haunting and unforgettable Halloween apocalypse.

Old Soul by Susan Barker

Old Soul

This spooky Halloween horror story takes you across the world with Jake, who’s chasing clues about a mysterious woman tied to deep loss and strange deaths.

It begins in Osaka, where Jake meets Mariko and they’re both grieving and both linked to this same eerie woman no one can trace.

The more Jake searches, the more disturbing testimonies he collects.

What really got me was how real the fear felt. Every story he finds feels like a haunting from a Halloween past, and the mystery pulled me in.

The trail leads to a dying sculptor in New Mexico – Theo – who might finally explain it all.

Old Soul blends ghost story chills with western grit. It’s such a chilling Halloween horror read that asks: what if evil had no beginning or end?

Nothing but Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw

Nothing but Blackened Teeth by

If you love Halloween ghost stories and haunted house horror, this one gave me serious chills.

A group of friends gathers at a crumbling Japanese mansion for a wedding, but the house has a dark secret: it’s built on the bones of a bride, and her spirit isn’t happy.

As the night goes on, strange things start happening, and honestly, I couldn’t stop reading.

The ghost bride with her creepy black smile will haunt your dreams. I absolutely enjoyed how it blended Japanese folklore into the spooky setting – it felt different in the best way.

This Halloween horror book is short but so powerful. It’s a perfect haunted tale to read under a blanket with all the lights off if you dare.

Night Film by Marisha Pessl

Night Film

Night Film is a perfect Halloween horror mystery for anyone who loves creepy stories that get under your skin.

A young woman dies, and everyone says it’s suicide, but Scott McGrath, a journalist, doesn’t believe it.

Her father’s past is full of secrets – he’s a famous horror movie director, and his films are darker than nightmares.

I got totally caught up in Scott’s search for the truth. The whole book feels like a twisted Halloween movie marathon, and the eerie vibes never stop.

It’s such a layered, eerie journey that’s full of creepy clues, chilling secrets, and one big question: is the horror just in the movies, or is it real?

We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer

We Used to Live Here

If you’ve ever felt weird vibes in a house, this Halloween horror thriller will really get to you.

Charlie and Eve are flipping an old house when a family knocks, claiming it used to be their home.

It starts innocent enough, but then strange things happen – creepy noises, eerie disappearances, and a ghostly energy that made me so nervous I had to take breaks reading.

I really loved how it starts normal and slowly becomes terrifying.

It reminded me of the unsettling feeling you get watching a really good Halloween horror movie where you know something’s wrong but can’t look away.

By the end, I was breathless.

This story will make you look twice at your own front door just in case someone unexpected knocks.

This Skin Was Once Mine and Other Disturbances by Eric LaRocca

This Skin Was Once Mine

This book is like a little box of Halloween horrors – each short story darker and more haunting than the last.

This Skin Was Once Mine broke my heart and chilled me to the bone. Jillian’s return home after her father’s death feels like walking into a haunted house of secrets.

In Seedling, the weird black wound and creepy family curse had me absolutely hooked.

And Prickle and All the Parts of You That Won’t Easily Burn are like eerie Halloween flashlights, shining into places we don’t usually go.

I loved how deeply emotional and disturbing each story was – it’s not just scary, it’s smart scary.

If you want Halloween horror short stories that twist your brain and tug at your soul, this one’s for you.
