As a lifelong book lover, there’s nothing that makes me as happy as when I am surrounded by fellow book enthusiasts, and we can simply talk and talk about books.
And frankly speaking, it’s even better when we have arranged an event centred around our hobby of reading, and we can have fun while keeping our brains and hands engaged.
If you are like me and you’ve been wondering what book-related events you can hold for you and your friends or your book club, I have some wonderful ideas.
Some of these require spending money, but the majority of them are budget-friendly, so you won’t have to put yourself out and you’ll still have a lot of fun.
Another thing I need to mention is that some of these events are dependent on the number of people that will be involved in the activity, so make sure you take that into consideration before putting your plans into motion.
1. Literary-themed cooking classes
If you enjoy cooking or have read a book about cooking and food, you could host a literary-themed cooking class. You could invite a professional chef, or you and your friends can follow recipes and get creative as you go.
2. Book-themed board game nights
There’s nothing that brings people closer than engaging in friendly competition, and the best way to do this is by having a fun board game night.
Since we are talking about book-related stuff, you could choose board games inspired by literature. Remember, even though it’s a competition, the end goal is to bond, so make sure you keep that in mind.
3. Book swap parties
Book swapping is not only an amazing way to save money while reading as many books as possible, but it can also be a fun event to pull together over the weekend.
If this sounds fun to you, you’ll want to make sure you work out all the preliminaries, such as creating the invite and arranging for the venue.
During this meeting, you can discover new reads, share your thoughts, and discuss favourite books in a social setting, and you’ll definitely make new friends.
4. Book-themed escape rooms
I personally have never been in an escape room, but I do know that if I ever go to one, it will be fun if it is centred around my interests.
So, for example, clues to unlock doors and find items could be linked to my favourite texts, and I somehow feel that this is a perfect bonding activity for a book club.
5. Author Q&A sessions
You could host a virtual or in-person author question and answer session. This will give you a chance to have intimate conversations and gain unique insights about your favourite books. It’s also another fun bookish activity you could do with your friends or book club members.

6. Bookish podcast or YouTube channel creation
For those who don’t mind recording their voice or video and posting it online, creating content for a bookish podcast or YouTube channel is a fun way to spend time.
Watching bookish content on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok can be the highlight of many days, and trust me, you’re going to have a lot of fun doing this with your friends.
7. Bookshelf organization parties
Many people struggle with determining how best to arrange their bookshelf, and it can become a bit of a hassle if it stays disorganized for a long time.
To make it more interesting, you can turn it into a fun activity and invite your friends or other book lovers to help transform your cluttered bookshelf.
8. Book-themed trivia nights
Test your knowledge of literature by hosting book-themed trivia nights with your friends. Nobody needs an excuse to read even more books, but this will definitely make your TBR list longer, and you’re going to have so much fun with it.
9. Host a read-a-thon
A read-a-thon is essentially an event where you and your friends dedicate an entire day to simply reading your favourite books in calm, collected silence.
For many of us, we don’t need our fun activities to be loud and too much of an effort, so this is perfect if you are someone who would like to bond but also catch up on your reading time.
10. Book-themed movie nights
Every year, many books get adapted into movies, and it’s very fun to watch an adaptation of your favourite book. To make this a group activity, you want to make sure you select a book that you all have feelings about, whether liking or disliking.
Then you can all plan to meet up and watch it on a particular day. Afterwards, over snacks or dinner, you can discuss everything you felt about the movie, whether it measured up to the book, or if you preferred the movie to the book. It’s definitely going to kickstart a lot of meaningful conversations and you’ll have fun too.

11. DIY bookbinding workshops
There’s really nothing like creating something from start to finish with your own hands, and luckily, there are a lot of bookish items that can be created.
So if you’re thinking of a bookish event to host, you could take your friends to learn the art of bookbinding or creating journals, sketchbooks, or even bookmarks that you can use well into the future.
12. Character cosplay parties
Cosplay is easily one of the most fantastic activities that unite lovers of different things in totally different industries.
For us book lovers, this means dressing up as your favourite characters from your favourite books, and it can be so much fun if you genuinely dedicate yourself to it.
Imagine doing it with your friends, laughing, eating, and genuinely being relaxed with each other. I promise you are going to have a whole lot of fun.
13. Plan a literary karaoke night
An introvert like me could never even imagine doing this, but I have a friend who once attended a literary karaoke night, and she promised that it was all types of fun.
Basically, what you do is perform very dramatic readings or recitations from your favourite books, and the whole acting-out process had everyone in stitches, according to her.
I can definitely see how this would be very interesting, especially if you are with people you feel very comfortable with. So definitely give this a try and let me know how it works out in the comment section.
14. Organize a bookish charity drive
For those of you who would like to have fun while also giving back to the community, it might be a good idea to host a literary charity drive.
This means you will plan with your friends to make a very positive impact by donating books or raising funds for literacy programs.
You could do this by hosting events in collaboration with other organisations, but what matters at the end of the day is that your motives must be clear.

I know that as a reader, sometimes it feels like there is really no way to explore your love of reading and literature without actually reading, but I promise there are so many bookish events you can host.
So if you’ve been thinking of a fun bookish activity you could host together with your friends or members of your book club, these are only a few of the ideas. But the way I see it, anything can literally be made bookish if you switch up the theme a bit.
