Best snow White book retellings to read scaled

Snow White is one of those stories that just never gets old.

I mean, who doesn’t love a tale with magic, a jealous queen, and that famous poisoned apple?

Originally told by the Brothers Grimm, this fairytale has been retold in so many cool and different ways. That’s probably why I love it so much.

Fairytales are very, very timeless like that—simple stories that stick with us no matter how long ago they were written. And Snow White? It’s one of my favorites.

There are some really awesome retellings that give it a fresh spin, and in this post, I’ll share some of the best ones with you!

Here Are 12 Must-Read Snow White Retellings:

1. Snow White & the Huntsman by Lily Blake

Snow White and the Huntsman

In this action-packed retelling, Snow White is the only person more beautiful than the evil queen, who seeks to destroy her.

But Snow White isn’t just running away—she’s training for battle with the huntsman who was originally sent to kill her.

Together, they prepare to take on the wicked queen and reclaim the kingdom.

I loved this twist on Snow White, especially how it turns her into a warrior instead of a damsel in distress.

If you enjoy strong female leads and a story filled with adventure and action, you’ll be captivated by this one.

It’s one of those retellings that keeps the core of the original tale while making Snow White a character you can really root for.

This version will easily draw you in with its thrilling pace and dark atmosphere!

2. Snow White by Jeanette Rose

Snow White Jeanette

Azura, practicing dark magic, is on a quest to become the evil queen by marrying into a royal family full of elemental power.

Meanwhile, Snow White, born with the power of the Ice Elemental, dreams of friendship and warmth

As their paths cross, both women are drawn to each other, but darkness lurks in the forest, threatening to tear them apart.

This is a unique retelling that combines magic, romance, and suspense.

The relationship between Azura and Snow brings a fresh take to the classic Snow White story, and the elemental powers add an intriguing layer.

I was completely hooked by the chemistry between the characters and the tension throughout the plot. If you’re a fan of fantasy with a darker twist, you’ll love this one!

3. The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine

The Shadow Queen

Lorelai, a fugitive princess, is determined to overthrow the wicked queen who took her throne and killed her father.

To do this, she must master her magic. Meanwhile, Prince Kol is forced to make a deal with the queen to save his kingdom, becoming her huntsman with a mission to capture Lorelai’s heart—literally.

But when Kol meets Lorelai, he’s torn between duty and his growing feelings for her.

I couldn’t put this book down! It’s full of action, magic, and a bit of romance and is frankly one of the best Snow White retellings out there.

I really loved the complexity of the characters, especially Lorelai, who is both tough and vulnerable.

The dynamic between her and Kol keeps the tension high, and the battle against the evil queen had me on the edge of my seat.

This one is a must-read if you love fairy tale retellings with a dash of magic and adventure.

Sophie, a kind princess, loses her heart—literally—when the queen’s huntsman is sent to kill her.

Sophie survives with the help of seven strangers and must find the strength to reclaim her throne.

As she uncovers the truth behind her fate, Sophie learns that kindness is the greatest strength of all.

What I adored about Poisoned is how it flips the idea of strength.

Sophie isn’t your typical warrior princess; her power comes from her heart and kindness.

It was refreshing to read a retelling that highlights emotional resilience and inner strength.

This one is perfect for anyone who loves a heartwarming twist on a classic tale.

5. Red As Blood, Black As Night by Jenna Thatcher

Red As Blood

In this retelling, a dark force has taken over Snow White’s kingdom.

Exiled from her throne, Snow White must fight for what’s rightfully hers with the help of a cursed man and unlikely allies from the very place she was sent to die.

This version of Snow White takes a much darker turn, with lots of action and strong character development.

I loved how the heroine is portrayed as fierce and determined to survive.

If you enjoy darker, more intense fairy tale retellings, you’ll definitely be drawn into this one.

Pure as Snow

Snow White, hiding from her sister, the evil Snow Queen, meets a huntsman named Emmett.

While Snow wants to restore peace, Emmett dreams of escaping the Chanted Forest.

They team up to defeat enemies and bring peace to the kingdom, but lies and secrets threaten to tear them apart.

This retelling was a delightful blend of romance and fantasy!

The pacing was great, and the inclusion of animals Snow can talk to added a fun touch.

After her father’s death, Snow White flees her kingdom to escape her wicked stepmother.

With the help of the huntsman Alexander, she must gain the strength to reclaim her throne and save her kingdom, battling not only external enemies but her own doubts as well.

I really connected with Snow White’s journey in this story, especially as she learns to overcome her own insecurities.

8. Snow by Tracy Lynn

Snow Tracy Lynn

Jessica, known as Snow, escapes her jealous stepmother by fleeing to London and joining a group of outcasts who become her new family.

But when her stepmother reappears, claiming to seek forgiveness, Snow must decide whom to trust.

I found this retelling to be very unique, especially since Snow White is hiding in London, far from the typical fairy tale setting.

The story felt fresh with its blend of urban and magical elements.

The Fairest of Them All

In this fascinating twist, Rapunzel grows up to become Snow White’s evil stepmother.

After an affair with a prince, Rapunzel becomes queen, but her beauty and power soon turn dark as she falls under the spell of a magical mirror.

As she struggles to maintain her control over the kingdom and her stepdaughter, Snow White, Rapunzel’s obsession with beauty and power threatens to consume her.

I really enjoyed how this retelling merges two classic fairy tales—Rapunzel and Snow White—into one story.

The idea that Rapunzel could become the evil queen is such an unexpected and clever twist and anyone would love this!

10. Mirrored by Alex Flinn

Mirrored

Violet, who feels ugly and unloved, learns magic to gain beauty and power, while Celine, her beautiful stepdaughter, suffers under Violet’s jealousy.

As their lives intertwine, Violet’s quest for beauty turns her into the evil stepmother who will do anything to be the fairest of them all.

I loved how this Snow White retelling leaned into the themes of beauty, insecurity, and self-worth, which made it very relatable despite the magical setting.

Violet’s descent into villainy is both tragic and understandable and that made the story even more compelling.

If you’re looking for a fairy tale retelling with a contemporary twist, this one is perfect!

11. Mira, Mirror by Mette Ivie Harrison

Mira Mirror

In this unique twist, Mira is a magical mirror, trapped in a wooden body after a spell cast by her sister, a witch.

Left behind when her sister disappears, Mira embarks on a journey with a peasant girl to find a new kind of magic that can give her life again.

I loved how this story explored the perspective of the magical mirror, turning a simple object from the original Snow White tale into the main character.

It’s a refreshing and creative take on the story, filled with themes of betrayal, sisterhood, and redemption.

Anyone looking for a truly original retelling will be enchanted by this one!

The Hunt

Three broken men, each battling their dark pasts, find their salvation in a mysterious woman.

Together, they must fight to protect her and themselves from the forces that would tear them apart.

This standalone dark romance reimagines Snow White with a “why choose” twist.

This retelling is definitely on the darker side, because it blends romance and fantasy in an intense way.

If you’re into dark, steamy reimaginings of classic fairy tales with a lot of emotional complexity, you’ll enjoy The Hunt.

The bond between the characters, along with the dark undertones, made it a gripping read that pulls you into a completely different side of the Snow White story.
