Beach days always sound simple in your head.
You picture yourself relaxing and then you actually get there and realize you forgot something important.
Now you’re too hot, too hungry, or just slightly uncomfortable for no good reason.
That’s why packing properly really matters.
And, I haven’t been to a beach in ages because of where I currently live, which still feels unfair. But I’ll be moving soon, and I’m so excited about it.
Beach days are already on my mind, and you already know I’m planning to pack like a pro this time.
So here’s everything you actually need.
Top 20 Beach Essentials Everyone Needs
1. Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum)
Go for something that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and if you can, pick a water-resistant one so you’re not reapplying every five seconds.
Cream formulas tend to last longer than sprays.
Honestly, this is the one thing I refuse to compromise on because one bad sunburn can ruin the whole week.
2. Beach towel or sand-free blanket
Those microfiber, sand-resistant towels are worth it – they shake clean instead of carrying half the beach home with you.
A larger blanket is even better if you like space (or snacks or both).
3. Swimsuit (plus a backup)
Quick-dry swimsuits are a game changer.
And having a second one just makes sense – you don’t realize how uncomfortable a damp swimsuit is until you’re stuck in it.
4. Sunglasses (UV-protected)
Not just for style – make sure they actually block UV rays.
Polarized ones are even better if you’ll be near water a lot because they cut glare.
5. Wide-brim hat or cap
A floppy hat gives better coverage, especially for your face and neck.
It’s one of those things you don’t think you need until you do.
6. Flip-flops or easy slip-on sandals
This should just be something you can kick off quickly. The sand gets hot, and I refuse to do that awkward hopping dance.
7. Reusable water bottle (insulated if possible)
An insulated bottle keeps your water cold for hours, which honestly makes a bigger difference than you’d expect. Warm water at the beach just feels wrong.
8. Snacks that won’t melt instantly
Think fruits, nuts, sandwiches, or granola bars. Anything chocolate-based is risky unless you enjoy chaos.
9. Large beach bag (preferably waterproof or lined)
Get one with compartments if you can. It saves you from digging endlessly for things at the bottom.
10. Beach umbrella or pop-up tent
Shade is everything. A small tent is especially useful if you plan to stay for hours and it makes the whole experience more comfortable.
11. A book, magazine, or e-reader
Even if you don’t read much, it just completes the whole beach mood.
Personally, I always bring one just in case and end up reading a few pages between snacks.
12. Waterproof phone pouch
A simple pouch can save your phone from water, sand, and accidental drops.
It’s one of those small things that feels unnecessary until you need it.
13. Wet wipes or cleansing wipes
For sandy hands, sticky fingers, or just feeling fresh. I always pack more than I think I’ll need.
14. Lip balm with SPF
Lips burn too, and it’s uncomfortable. A simple SPF lip balm fixes that.
15. Extra clothes (light and breathable)
Loose cotton or linen works best. Changing into something dry after swimming just feels right.
16. Hair ties, scrunchies, or a scarf
Wind and saltwater will result in a tangled mess. Having something to pull your hair back saves you the stress later.
17. Power bank
Between photos, music, and scrolling, your battery will drop faster than expected. I don’t like being stuck with a dead phone anywhere.
18. Aloe vera gel or after-sun lotion
Even if you’re careful, a little sun exposure happens. Aloe helps calm your skin quickly.
19. Trash bag or reusable waste bag
It keeps your space clean and makes packing up easier. Plus, nobody wants to deal with sandy trash later.
20. Portable speaker (optional, keep it low)
Nice for a chill vibe, but definitely keep the volume respectful. Not everyone wants to hear your playlist.
A beach day should feel easy, but a little planning goes a long way.
I already know when I finally get back to the beach, I’ll probably overpack and I won’t even feel bad about it.
