I am one of those people who is always super proud of being able to read anything as long as it’s interesting.
So understandably, it took me a long time to admit I just wasn’t into comics.
I love the art, and the storylines are interesting, but there’s just something about the format that never really immerses me in the story.
When I found graphic novels, it was an absolute delight.
Graphic novels, for me, are that perfect cross between full-length novels and comics.
We get art, but we also get prose, and it’s a nice balance. I haven’t read a bad one to date.
In this post, I’m going to be listing my favorite young adult graphic novels that I think everyone needs to read.
There seems to be a bias – or perhaps an imagined bias – that young adult books should only be read by teens, and I think that’s so wrong.
I’m well into my 20s now, and I still enjoy a good YA book. I believe everyone should read whatever makes them happy.
So, if you’ve been thinking about which young adult graphic novels to read or which ones recommend to someone in your life, here are my top recommendations.
1. Nimona by ND Stevenson

Nimona is a shapeshifter with a mischievous streak and dreams of becoming a villain.
She then teams up with Lord Ballister Blackheart, a villain with a personal vendetta, to take on the so-called heroes of the kingdom.
As their pranks get bigger, Nimona’s powers grow more dangerous, and Lord Blackheart starts to wonder if she’s more of a threat than he bargained for.
I love how quirky and fun this one is, and it definitely keeps you guessing.
2. Demon in the Wood: A Shadow and Bone Graphic Novel by Leigh Bardugo and Dani Pendergast

Before he became the Darkling, he was just a lonely boy with an incredible power he didn’t understand.
This graphic novel dives into his childhood, where danger and mystery lurk at every corner, setting the stage for the rise of Ravka’s most powerful and feared figure.
It’s a darker, intriguing look at his backstory, and if you’re a fan of Shadow and Bone, you’ll love this!
3. The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien by John Hendrix

This graphic novel brings to life the friendship between C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, two literary giants who shared a love for myth, faith, and fantasy.
It tells the story of how their bond helped shape their masterpieces like The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings.
I think it’s such a beautiful tribute to their influence, and it shows how their friendship impacted storytelling for generations.
4. On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden

Mia joins a crew rebuilding broken-down structures across space, but her heart is tied to a love she left behind at boarding school.
Flashbacks reveal her emotional journey, and the art in this book is just stunning.

5. Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

Charlie, a nervous, openly gay student, and Nick, a kind rugby player, become fast friends.
As they spend more time together, Charlie starts falling for Nick, even though he’s unsure of what Nick feels.
This is one of the sweetest stories about love and friendship, and I love how relatable the characters are.
It’s a heartwarming and hopeful read that everyone needs to absolutely read right now.
6. First Test Graphic Novel by Tamora Pierce

Keladry is the first girl in Tortall to try to become a knight.

8. Crumbs by Danie Stirling

In 1946, the Lee family moves to Metropolis, where they face racism and threats from the Ku Klux Klan.
With Superman’s help, Roberta Lee finds out hidden truths about the Klan’s influence.
This is a powerful, action-packed graphic novel with a deep message about racism and standing up for what’s right.
10. Anne of Greenville by Mariko Tamaki

This modern retelling of Anne of Green Gables follows Anne, a queer, Japanese-American girl who’s just moved to a small town.
