Summer 2026 is a genuinely good time to be a fantasy reader.
The releases lined up for these next few months cover so much ground — epic fantasy, intimate fantasy, debut authors swinging big, established authors returning to worlds I’ve missed — and I have been looking forward to this season for a while now.
I want to read all of these.
Some of them I’ve already been waiting on longer than feels reasonable.
Here’s what’s coming and why I think it’s worth your time.
Summer 2026 Fantasy Book Releases
Inkpot Gods by Seanan McGuire (June 9th)

Over a century ago, a powerful alchemist built an entire city from imagination and dark magic and now her descendants are living inside the world she created, facing the consequences of everything she did.
This sounds like the most layered, imaginative fantasy world, and I am so excited to return to it this summer.
Seanan McGuire builds stories that feel completely alive, and this one sounds like a breathtaking addition to the series.
If you love fantasy that is deeply creative and full of wonder, this one is absolutely perfect for you.
The Winged Game by Sophie Kim (June 30th)

Taissa was the best in a brutal magical sport until her rival destroyed everything.
Now they have to fake a relationship, solve a mysterious illness threatening their winged creatures, and somehow not fall for each other.
This is fantasy and slow-burn romance wrapped into one thrilling story, and I genuinely cannot wait.
A fake relationship plus magical creatures plus a mystery to solve? This is exactly the kind of book I live for.
Green City Wars by Adrian Tchaikovsky (June 23rd)

In a future city run by humans, a raccoon private detective takes a case involving a missing mouse and stumbles into something far bigger and more dangerous than anyone expected.
This noir mystery with an entirely animal cast sounds wildly original and clever. I am so looking forward to this one.
Adrian Tchaikovsky always does something unexpected and brilliant, and the idea of Philip Marlowe meets Redwall for adults is honestly genius.
This is going to be one of the most fun fantasy reads of the whole summer.
The Witch Queen by Heather Walter (August 4th)

Queen Ayleth has the kingdom under her control but her grip is slipping as old enemies return, dark magic deepens, and Snow White comes back from exile with a plan to take back the throne.
This lush, queer retelling of a classic fairy tale sounds absolutely stunning.
I have been looking forward to this conclusion so much.
Heather Walter writes with such richness and emotion, and this Snow White villain origin story has been one of my most anticipated fantasy reads.
August cannot come fast enough.
The Unicorn Hunters by Katherine Arden (June 2nd)

Young duchess Anne of Brittany is fighting to keep her kingdom from being swallowed by France and her secret plan involves a unicorn hunt in an enchanted forest that hides far more magic than anyone knows.
Based on real history and wrapped in fairy tale magic, this sounds absolutely stunning.
Katherine Arden wrote some of my favorite fantasy ever, and I am beyond excited for this one.
A clever, brave heroine, ancient enchanted forests, and high political stakes? This is going to be something truly special.
A Dance of Burning Blades by M. H. Ayinde (August 11th)

War is spreading across the Nine Lands, old alliances are breaking apart, and a young man who looks a lot like a missing invoker is quietly planning his revenge.
This second book in the Invoker Trilogy sounds even bigger and more intense than the first, and I am so ready for it.
Epic fantasy with ancestor magic, warring clans, and political scheming is exactly my kind of story
Six Savage Thrones by Holly Race (June 16th)

The wives of Henry VIII but reimagined as queens with dragons and magic, banding together to bring down a dangerous king.
This second book in the Queens of Elben trilogy sounds bold, brilliant, and completely thrilling. I am so looking forward to this one.
Holly Race takes one of history’s most dramatic stories and makes it even more epic with sapphic romance, courtly scheming, and ancient magic.
This is the kind of fantasy that feels fresh and exciting and like nothing else out there right now.
Light Wielder by Rachel Schneider (June 9th)

Jovie and Acker were torn apart by a painful betrayal and now war is raging around them while they fight their feelings for each other through shared dreams and impossible choices.
This emotionally charged fantasy romance sounds deeply moving and full of tension.
I have been so eager to see how this story continues, and this summer feels like the perfect time to lose myself in it completely.
Rachel Schneider writes with so much heart, and the Matching Bond storyline is the kind of thing that stays with you.
The River She Became by Emily Varga (June 30th)

Yaseema secretly steals back magical relics to save her dying homeland until she finds the key to crossing into the fae world, where she meets a cold-eyed captain hiding his own rebellion.
This sounds like a lush, action-packed romantasy full of ancient curses and impossible choices. I am so here for this one.
A brave, brilliant heroine stealing her future back while falling for the enemy? That is exactly the kind of story I love most, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it this summer.
The Unmagical Life of Briar Jones by Lex Croucher (June 9th)

Briar always dreamed of attending the elite magical school that rejected them and years later, a summer job lands them right inside its walls, where their childhood best friend has become someone cold and feared, and the school’s secrets are far darker than anyone imagined.
This dark academia fantasy sounds addictive and emotionally rich. I am genuinely so excited. Absolutely perfect summer reading.
Last of the First by L. E. Modesitt Jr. (June 30th)

Alyiakal has won every battle on the outside but now he faces something far trickier: the corrupt politics and power struggles happening inside his own empire.
This sweeping conclusion to a four-book arc in the legendary Saga of Recluce series sounds like a deeply satisfying payoff for longtime fans.
I am so looking forward to seeing how Alyiakal navigates this final challenge.
White Lights by Lauren Kate (June 4th)

Dez is running from the law after a violent attack leaves her brother in the hospital and ends up at a mysterious elite film school full of dark secrets and otherworldly power.
This sounds like a wild, atmospheric ride from the very first page. I am so intrigued by this one.
A film school with cosmic stakes and dangerous competition is such a fresh and exciting fantasy premise, and Lauren Kate always brings so much tension and atmosphere to her stories.
I honestly cannot wait to see where this goes.
The Witch Below the Dreaming Wood by H. G. Parry (July 21st)

It is 1941, bombs are falling, and people all over the world are suddenly dreaming of King Arthur except one librarian, who dreams instead of Nimue, and whose dreams promise darkness rather than salvation.
This historical fantasy sounds absolutely enchanting. I am so looking forward to this one.
H. G. Parry weaves history and magic together in the most beautiful way, and Arthurian legends set against World War Two is an idea that feels both timely and timeless.
This is going to be a gem.
A Trade of Blood by Robert Jackson Bennett (August 4th)

Two powerful families are on the edge of war, and the only way to stop it is for brilliant detective Ana Dolabra to prove an innocent man’s guilt – fast.
This third Ana and Din mystery sounds impossibly gripping and full of the sharp wit and clever plotting that makes this series so beloved. I am so excited for this one.
I love that this author always writes mysteries inside fantasy worlds with such skill, and the stakes here sound higher than ever. August is going to be a fantastic month for fantasy readers.
The Raven at the Ash Door by K. A. Linde (June 16th)

Kierse’s magic is bound to a man she hates, the man she loves is in danger, and the only hope of breaking the curse is a legendary stone relic missing for a century while an ancient enemy closes in.
This sounds like an emotional, action-packed fantasy full of the kind of tension that keeps you reading at midnight.
I have been so eager for this one. K. A. Linde writes with so much passion and urgency, and Kierse and Graves are such a compelling pair.
This summer just got even better.
Fantasy seasons like this one do not come around all the time, and I plan to make the most of it.
I’ll be reading, reviewing, and updating this post as the summer goes on.
So, if you want the full picture, bookmark this and come back.
These are the kinds of books that stay with you well past the last page, and that is exactly what I am here for.
