Horror new book releases 2026 scaled

I’ve talked about this on the blog before, but it took me a very long time to even pick up a thriller book.

When I first started reading horror, I was surprised by how much I ended up loving it.

Now that it’s a new year, I decided to put together this list of the best horror books you absolutely need to read.

There’s nothing particularly New Year–themed about these books, but they are all incredible, and I genuinely love every single one of them.

These are the books I always, always recommend, and I think they’re especially perfect for 2026.

So if you’re looking to get lost in a really good story, check out any of these amazing horror books – you truly can’t go wrong.

A Box Full of Darkness by Simone St. James

A Box Full of Darkness

Violet, Vail, and Dodie had to leave their small town of Fell, New York, after their little brother vanished while playing hide‑and‑seek.

Now, years later, they’re pulled back by something they can’t ignore  –  Ben is back.

And that thought gives me all the chills because you know deep down it’s not going to be an easy reunion.

The town itself feels creepy in the best scary‑story way: a stranger drowns by a roadside motel, and a girl’s body shows up by the railroad tracks.

Every weird thing makes me lean forward a little more, because I want to know what secrets Fell is hiding. Violet still sees ghosts, especially something called Sister, and I absolutely feel her fear and curiosity.

Hollow by Celina Myers

Hollow

Mia Adair thought her life at the bookstore was just okay, and she definitely didn’t expect anything big to happen. But then a tragic car accident transforms her into a vampire, and everything changes.

I literally love that twist because it turns what feels like the worst moment into something powerful and strange.

Suddenly Mia has to choose where she belongs and who she trusts.

There are two vampire families  –  the Bellamys and the Suttons  –  and honestly, I already can feel my heart going thump‑thump about the love interests and family ties.

It sounds like there’s centuries of hidden history and traditions, plus secret powers and betrayals that make my imagination run wild.

What makes this even sweeter is that Mia starts to feel her old gift  –  talking to the dead  –  coming back stronger than ever.

And I can totally imagine cheering for her when she realizes her true purpose is to protect people she cares about.

This one sounds like emotional scares, new family drama, and love all wrapped into one eerie but hopeful story.

On Sundays She Picked Flowers by Yah Yah Scholfield

On Sundays She Picked Flowers

Judith Rice escapes her painful past and finds refuge in the woods of southern Georgia, in a house full of ghosts and old stories.

I adore how this book seems to mix the creepy things with something softer  –  the idea of tending to the past while trying to grow into peace.

Over thirteen years, Jude becomes a healer of sorts, like she’s fixing what was broken inside her.

But then an unsettling woman appears, and oh my heart, things get complicated.

There are strange urges and memories that rise up, and suddenly Jude has to face the dark parts of her own history.

I’m really excited for this one because it sounds like the kind of story that stays with you  –  a little bit eerie, a little bit wise, and super emotional in all the best ways.

I can already picture myself thinking about it long after the pages are done.

This House Will Feed by Maria Tureaud

This House Will Feed

This book grabbed me right away because it blends history with spooky mystery, and that just feels irresistible.

Set during Ireland’s Great Famine, it follows Maggie O’Shaughnessy  –  a young woman who’s lost so much but still clings to hope.

I adore that promise she made to her brother, because it makes her journey feel brave and deep.

When Maggie is offered a strange job at a haunted manor, it feels almost like magic mixed with danger.

She’s supposed to pretend to be someone else, but the house itself has memories and whispers that make my skin tingle just reading the description.

And as something in the manor starts to stir Maggie’s own hidden memories, the story becomes so much more than just ghostly scares.

I’m so here for Maggie’s growth, her courage, and all the creepy secrets of that old house. It sounds like a story that’s rich, emotional, and hauntingly beautiful all at once.

Humboldt Cut by Allison Mick

Humboldt Cut

This debut novel feels like a spooky, heart‑pounding walk through the darkest parts of the forest and the soul.

Jasmine Bay is a nurse who’s been dealing with really heavy feelings, and returning home for her godmother’s funeral stirs up everything she’s tried to leave behind.

The redwood forests of northern California are huge, quiet, and perfectly eerie  –  almost like their own characters in the story.

What I think is so cool about this book is that it mixes the natural world with real emotional weight.

As Jas follows the trail of her missing brother, she uncovers family secrets buried deep in the woods  –  secrets that literally turn into strange creatures made of bark and flesh.

That image is creepy in a way that sticks with you, and I already feel so excited and a tiny bit nervous to read it.

It’s amazing how a well-told horror tale can make you feel so alive – my heart was racing, my mind was buzzing, and yet, I felt this pure happiness from getting lost in the pages.
