With the warmer months coming up, vacation season is officially here.
Even if you aren’t leaving the house and just plan to relax at home, having a solid book is a must.
That is why I wrote this post.
I wanted to share the most addictive books that you can easily finish on a single trip.
These books are fast-paced and straightforward, which makes it easy to jump right back into the story whenever you get a break in your schedule.
They are so interesting that the pages practically turn themselves.
Best Books You Can Finish on a Trip
1. A Separation by Katie Kitamura

If you love a quiet but intense mystery, this one is absolutely perfect for a short trip.
The story follows a young woman who has secretly agreed to separate from her unfaithful husband.
Before they can tell anyone, he goes missing in a remote, rugged part of Greece, and she reluctantly agrees to go look for him.
I really enjoyed how the author builds up the tension without using a lot of loud drama.
Instead, you are trapped in the narrator’s mind as she travels through a wild landscape, realizing how little she actually knew the man she married.
It is a deeply addictive look at secrets, marriage, and infidelity that will keep you totally glued to your seat until the very last page.
2. We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

Oh, I absolutely loved this creepy little classic.
It is a dark, spooky gothic tale about two sisters, Merricat and Constance, who live isolated in a big estate with their uncle.
The rest of their family died from a mysterious poisoning years ago, and the local townspeople completely hate them.
The main character, Merricat, has such a strange, unique, and twisted voice that hooks you immediately.
When a greedy cousin arrives to disrupt their quiet lives, the tension shoots through the roof.
It is a deliciously weird and unsettling book, but it is also filled with so much heart.
Because it is so short and fast-paced, it is totally addictive and easy to finish before your plane lands.
3. I Miss You When I Blink by Mary Laura Philpott

This charming memoir feels just like a warm, funny pep talk from a best friend, which makes it the ultimate cozy travel companion.
The author thought she had life all figured out: get the job, the house, the husband, and the kids.
But once she checked everything off her list, she realized she just felt anxious and stuck in a grueling daily grind.
I found her essays so incredibly relatable and comforting.
She shows us that it is okay to change your mind and reinvent yourself without burning your whole life down.
It is an easy, beautiful read filled with wit and real heart that keeps you happily turning the pages.
4. The Circus by Jonas Karlsson

Imagine going to a circus with an old school friend, watching him volunteer for a magic trick, and then watching him vanish completely into thin air.
That is the wild setup of this clever book.
When the narrator tries to find his friend, things get even weirder – other friends claim they have never heard of the guy, and his apartment seems totally deserted.
I really enjoyed the main character’s simple life and how quickly his reality gets turned upside down.
It is a fast, puzzling psychological mystery that makes you question everything alongside the narrator.
This one is a very sharp, clever suspense novel that you can easily devour in one afternoon.
5. Frisk by Dennis Cooper

I have to be completely honest with you all – I really did not enjoy this book, and it was definitely not for me.
The story starts when a teenager sees a series of graphic, violent photographs of a boy, which sparks a lifelong, dark obsession with death and the human body.
Years later, he travels to a windmill in Europe to explore these dark fantasies in real life.
While the book is short and shocks you enough to keep you reading fast, the heavy, graphic horror and intense themes make it a pretty tough journey.
It explores the absolute limits of human desire, but it is certainly a very dark ride for a trip.
6. McGlue by Ottessa Moshfegh

This short book takes you back to the year 1851 and traps you inside a dark, smelly ship hold.
The main character, McGlue, is a crude sailor who is too drunk to even remember his own name, let alone why he is locked up.
The crew tells him he killed a man and that man might have been his absolute best friend.
It is a rough, gritty story about a very unlikable person trying to piece his memories back together through a heavy fog of alcohol.
The writing is incredibly sharp, unique, and fast-paced.
If you like dark historical tales and intense character studies, this short voyage is great for a quick trip.
7. All Systems Red by Martha Wells

If you want something that is pure fun, exciting, and impossible to put down, you will absolutely love this one.
The story is about a funny, grumpy security robot on a distant planet.
It has secretly hacked its own control system, but it doesn’t want to conquer the universe – it just wants to be left alone to watch thousands of hours of futuristic soap operas.
However, when a neighboring human mission goes completely dark, it has to step up and save its human clients.
I had so much fun reading this book. It is short, action-packed, witty, and completely addictive from the very first sentence.
8. My Phantoms by Gwendoline Riley

This is a sharp, quiet, and deeply observant novel about a woman named Bridget and her difficult relationship with her aging mother.
Her mother is a lonely woman who has spent her life making poor choices in relationships, and now, as she nears the end of her life, the two women have to face each other.
To be honest, it can feel a bit sad and uncomfortable to read because the author captures family arguments and small cruelties so perfectly.
But the realistic dialogue and tense dynamic are so fascinating that you just want to keep reading to see if they can finally find peace.
9. The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes

This brilliant book follows a middle-aged man named Tony who thinks he lives a perfectly calm, simple life.
But out of nowhere, a mysterious legal will forces him to face a dark tragedy from his university days that he spent years trying to forget.
It is a stunning, gripping mystery about memory and how we rewrite our own personal histories to make ourselves look better.
I thought it was completely brilliant and beautifully written.
It has so much psychological depth and an amazing twist, yet it is so short you can easily read the entire thing in a single sitting.
You don’t want to get stuck on a trip with a slow book that feels like homework.
Packing a fast, addictive story is the easiest way to make sure your down time is actually fun, no matter where you end up this season.
Every book on this list is a quick, thrilling ride that you can easily crush before you head back home.
Take a look at the options above, pick your favorite, and toss it in your bag before you leave.
