I don’t even know what’s going on, but it genuinely feels like every day horror writers are upping the ante and publishing books that are so amazing and so indescribable.
I started reading more adult fiction a couple of years ago when I decided to branch out from my first love and start exploring other genres, and trust me when I say I have had a blast.
Horror books, in particular, took some time for me to come around to, but they are just so amazing.
I always keep track of new releases, and this year especially has brought some of the best horror books I’ve ever read.

I was literally in awe while reading them – these books are just incredible.
If you’re a horror fan like me, you should definitely check them out.
The Garden by Nick Newmann

In The Garden, two elderly sisters live quietly in a hidden walled garden, tending their bees and crops, following rules set long ago.
But their peaceful world is shaken when a strange boy appears out of nowhere, hiding in a boarded-up house. Who is he, really? Why is he there?
This book feels like a dreamy nightmare, beautifully written but haunting, almost like Piranesi.
I love how it explores how secrets can grow like weeds if you ignore them.
Watching Evelyn and Lily question everything they’ve ever known gave me chills, and I think you’ll feel that too.
Boys with Sharp Teeth by Jenni Howell

Marin goes undercover at an elite school to solve her cousin’s death, and she suspects two magnetic but dangerous boys.
But then she gets tangled up in their world, where dark secrets and even darker magic lurk behind the school’s fancy walls.
I really felt Marin’s confusion and fear – she’s tough yet so lost at the same time.
The book’s a mix of We Were Liars and The Raven Boys with that dreamy, addictive boarding-school vibe.
I think it’s fascinating how Marin questions love, hate, and what justice really means.
This story pulls you in, wraps you in its spell, and makes you wonder if the truth is worth the price of your own heart.
The Starving Saints by Caitlin Starling

Three women in a castle under siege must survive when eerie, godlike figures appear, promising help but asking for worship in return in this fantastic 2025 horror book.
Food returns, the sick are healed, but everything feels wrong.
I found it so powerful how they struggle against these saviors, trying to keep their minds clear while everyone else falls into madness.
Their shifting friendships and secrets make the story even more intense.
It’s messy and hypnotic, and you’ll see what people will sacrifice when they’re starving for food and faith.
I think you’ll be pulled into this twisted world, rooting for these brave women as they fight to survive against the darkness, inside and out.
Listen to Your Sister by Neena Viel

Listen to Your Sister is a scary, funny, and surprisingly loving book about family.
Calla takes care of her brother Jamie, who’s full of trouble and rebellion. She’s tired and dreams of a better life, but after a protest goes wrong, they’re forced to hide out in a creepy cabin.
I really connected with Calla’s protective love and the way her nightmares warned her about the dangers ahead.
The horror felt so real but was also mixed with this warm, big-hearted look at siblings who sometimes drive you crazy but still mean everything.
If you love Stranger Things or Jordan Peele’s stories, this will be perfect for you.
I think you’ll feel that bittersweet, brave fight for family deep in your heart.
When the Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy

In When the Wolf Comes Home, a struggling actress named Jess finds a runaway boy hiding in her yard and suddenly they’re on the run from his terrifying father.
Their journey turns into a bloody nightmare with horrors Jess could never imagine.
Honestly, I love how this book takes you on a chase where you don’t even know who to trust, and the fear just keeps growing.
Jess tries to be brave, but she can barely keep up with the darkness closing in around her.
It’s raw and wild, showing how monsters might hide in human faces.
This feels like a gut-punch of a story, where you can’t stop turning pages even when it hurts. I think you’ll be breathless reading this one.
Wake Up and Open Your Eyes by Clay McLeod Chapman

Noah’s parents become trapped in a trance from watching certain media, and soon they attack him.
Across the country, families turn violent under this strange, spreading curse.
It’s so sad and chilling how love can break when something evil takes over, and I felt Noah’s fear as he tried to save what was left of his family.
This book feels like a mirror to our own divided world, and that’s what makes it so scary.
I think you’ll get goosebumps, because it feels possible – like it could happen any day.
The tension never lets up, and it’s heartbreaking but unforgettable.
The Haunting of Room 904 by Erika T. Wurth

The Haunting of Room 904 is a spooky and heartfelt paranormal thriller.
Olivia, who can talk to the dead, takes on a chilling case after her sister dies mysteriously.
In a creepy Denver hotel, girls keep dying in the same room, and Olivia must face not just ghosts, but secrets about her sister’s hidden life.
I love that this story combines a haunting with deep family heartbreak, and that makes it emotional as well as scary. It shows how the past can follow you, no matter how hard you run.
Olivia is a strong but hurting heroine, and I really admired her courage. If you like a ghost story with a mystery twist, I think you’ll adore this eerie, beautiful, and unforgettable read.
Their Monstrous Hearts by Yigit Turhan

Riccardo inherits his grandmother’s old villa and butterfly collection in Milan, hoping it will help him escape his failures.
But the house is falling apart, and the butterflies feel more like a warning than pretty art.
The villagers act strange, and the greenhouse holds dark secrets that might swallow Riccardo whole.
I found this book haunting, almost like a dream gone wrong, and it made me think about how family legacies can trap us.
The atmosphere is rich and spooky, so it’s perfect if you love gothic horror with a quiet dread that creeps up on you.
I think you’ll feel both terrified and fascinated while Riccardo tries to survive his own twisted inheritance.
Our Winter Monster by Dennis Mahoney

Holly and Brian want to fix their broken relationship on a winter trip, but their car crashes in a blizzard, and something monstrous begins hunting them.
I really felt their fear and heartbreak – they’re so human, so lost in their own mistakes. And then the horror shows up, hungry and merciless.
This story feels personal and scary, and I genuinely thought about how monsters don’t just come from outside, but from the secrets we carry.
I think you’ll love the snowy setting and the terrifying beast waiting in the shadows. Definitely one to read with the lights on.
Hungerstone by Kat Dunn

Hungerstone is a dark, romantic horror with a strong bite.
Lenore, stuck in a cold marriage, meets the mysterious Carmilla after an accident, and feels a desire she’s never known before.
But girls nearby start falling ill with a bloody hunger, and soon Lenore must face the truth about Carmilla and herself.
I adore how this story reimagines Carmilla with a feminist twist, and Lenore is given power and pain in equal measure.
It’s lush and spooky, set in a grand old house on the moors where secrets feel alive.
I think you’ll be swept away by its dark romance and fierce heart, and the way it shows how a woman’s hunger – for love, freedom, or even blood – can become something unstoppable.
Remember to let me know which horror books will make it onto your TBR, and which ones you think don’t really deserve a spot.
I’m always excited to talk to other bookish people in the community, so let’s keep the conversation going.
